Actually, stress decreases acid production acutely, but leads to an increase later when you calm down. And there is no longer considered to be a strong link between stress and peptic ulcer disease, mostly it's caused by NSAID use (drugs like aspirin and motrin) or H. Pylori (a bacteria that many people are colonized with, but only seems to cause a problem in a few).

I would have to guess that it is part of the sympathetic nervous system. When you are stressed this mech is turned on. Which seems to me that it would leave your stomach full of acid from the break down processes. Very good question.

It used to be said that stress was the reason people got ulcers. There are new studies out now that there is simple bacteria that can with stand acid and burrow's in the duodenum ( or peptic). This bacteria is called H.plori.

Actually, scientists now know that it is a bacterial infection that is the root cause of ulcers (Heliobacter pylori is the name of the bacterium). Stress used to be blamed, but is not really the cause. Ulcers are now successfully treated with antibiotics that kill H. pylori.

I'm pretty sure they proved a couple of years ago that stress does not cause ulcers. That's what they've been saying here (in Australia) anyway.
