Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not CHOOSE anything. He conveyed to us what was revealed to him. The Quran states that death penality is the punishment of killing an innocent soul for justice. Punishment in Islam is of the same kind of action you did. Why should you kill an innocent soul and torture all their family and expect to live some years in jail then go loose? The severe punishment is meant both for justice and for stopping people from killing in the first place.
Peace

I know I don't have all the answers, but I know that GOD dose, and although capital punishment might seem cruel to us, there must be a way of letting people know they can not go around killing , raping and doing ungodly things and not get any punishment.
If you believe the Bible, which I do, you can see that GOD set this plan in motion himself, sin dose not go unpunished, and I believe that capital punishment is God's way of dealing with the earthly evils of this day. In the end, only GOD will give out the everlasting punishment to all that deserve it..

well! there was this fear of punishment here n hereafter by Allah, that really made the islamic nation a heaven at Muhammad(pbuh) time,n ppl remained careful...it was these priinciples, which controlled ppl's feelings of anger, agitation n revenge,otherwise...
now there is not a single real islamic state anywhere in the world....at some places, principles of islam are totally detoriorated n at other places they have reached extremes...islam didn't teach a lesson of extremism...
leaving guilty,or forgiving him(islam says later u can) but if this is what u teach to ppl, they won't fear of commiting crime n then think where wll the society go....

No man has shown again and again he can indeed end a life. It might now be in accordance with God but it does happen. Capital punishment has it's place. And it cuts down severely on repeat offenders.
