On a return to NYC from Boston on the shuttle. Airline was the now defunct Eastern Airlines, one engine caught fire. We were advised of an emergency landing as we made our approach you could see yellow fire trucks all lined up over the runway. Then we could see flames and black smoke bellowing out of one the engines under the right wing. My memory fails me on when an how they put out the fire, but we exited the plane on the run way using portable steps that lined up with the planes exit door. A bus took us to the terminal. I did not feel nervous about what could have happened until later that night while trying to fall asleep

I went on a cruise out of San Juan and we flew over from Orlando,Florida. That was the worst. They were having tornado warnings when we flew out.It followed all the way!The plane went up and down and sideways. They tried to fly above the clouds and it didn't happen. It wasn't the airlines fault but the weather.I love flying but that was really terrible. We had lightening too!It was really the only time I was actually afraid of not getting to my destination.

Coming into land at Riyadh, we had a bird strike which made a massive bang and shut down one of the Engines. Up until that point it was an excellent flight, but then again I'm nervous on take off and Landing, so it did not help me much, especially as I couldn't have a drink to calm myself down!.

Garuda from Bali to Jarkata as part of an onward journey to Jo'burg. It began when I got a message from the hotel saying that I hadn't paid the extras on my bill - I had, but the receipts were buried at the bottom of my suitcase and I wasn't able to get at them, but I sat in the departure lounge worrying in case they'd stop me getting on the plane.
Then on the plane they had an emergency with lots of bumping and the oxygen masks coming down. So I wrote a message to my best beloved in my Filofax and tucked it inside my bra in the hope that at least the bra would stay on the body when we plummeted into the sea.
Got to Jakarta with 90 minutes to find the flight to Singapore, only to find that the travel agent had given me an out-of-date name for the airline and I couldn't find the flight ... finally did, but only with the help of people who demanded money at every stage.
Finally got onto the SAA flight Singapore-Jo'burg and came down with Bali Belly - throwing up, down, out ... SAA staff were, as always, brilliant and fed me yogurt and Imodium although I nonetheless threw up in the arrivals hall (they were redecorating the airport and I couldn't easily see a Ladies' Loo).
Never, ever again.

Flying from Ontario, California to Sacramento, California. About five minutes into the trip, either we hit a massive air pocket or we were avoiding another plane, but our plane turned to the right very sharply and we dropped a couple of thousand feet. Scared the crap out of me. I was only 11 years old and thought I was about to die.
