Jesus and John were first cousins and had a very close relationship. Their mother's were sisters. When Mary found out she was with child, one of the first to know about it was Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist. It is said that John lept for joy while in his mother's womb at the news.

Mary's mother and Elizabeth and Mary were cousin's because when Mary tells her mother Anna about the dream she had that angel came to her told her that she must go to Elizabeth because she about to give birth Anna doesn't believe her says my cousin Elizabeth she is barren and now much to old to give birth! Mary continues with the angel said she six months along i must go to her tell the good news of whats else the angel send by God told me also. that i shall have a son he shall be named Jesus.when Mary arrived john leaped in Elizabeth's womb.

John the Baptist and Jesus were cousins, which would make their mothers either sisters or sisters in law which i beleive they would just use the word sister for anyways...so sisters
