She hasn't even been limping. She's just completely hopping around with her hind right leg up in the air. Her ankle/hock joint seems swollen, but she'll let me touch it and she doesn't seem to have any external injuries on her leg or foot. She had to have acl surgery a year ago for her back left leg. She's a lab mix, about 80 lbs, a bit overweight. With her acl, she'd at least limp on the bad leg. I've got a vet appt. for her asap, but it's still two days away b/c of the holiday & Colorado weather. What could she have done and how can I make her more comfortable in the meantime?

Thanks for the answers so far. . . today she's actually got a huge knot on the inside of her ankle (close to golf ball size). Yikes! I know this isn't good and her vet appt. still stands. Any ideas what it could be?

Don't worry yet, she could have just sprained it/twisted it like we do. You can give her childrens aspirin to make her more comfortable. Check the dose on the bottle, and give to her by the weight recommendation. Keep her as quiet as you can, so no to irritate it more. You said that you could touch the hock right? That's a good sign. I'm sure she'll be fine. Cuddle up with her, and keep her calm. I hope it turns out ok.

First make sure you use a pet friendly "ice melt", you can buy this at most hardware stores. Ice builds up between their toes so check her out to see if this is the case, also check for cracks between toes and on pads as cold weather can damage this area,"just as it does our skin". I placed my dog on a homemade diet and his ear and joint problems are a thing of the past. If you do this you will need to supplement his vitamins, I add glucosomine "the same one I take" three times a week in his food, also flax oil with omega 3 6 and 9 (daily) and I season his food with just a little garlic. He loves it. All this can be purchased at any drug store/wal-mart etc. Make sure you get liquid or capsules puncture or break open pills and mix in his food. No need to buy a 40$ bottle the store brand works just as well. Good Luck

Really look closely between her toes for something lodged there. Also, soak her foot in warm, not hot water and swab on some triple anti-biotic ointment, not creme, but ointment. Eyeball the whole leg carefully, putting it through gently range of motion, bendings. Let her stay warm and rest tonight and if she's not better tomorrow, consider letting a vet take a gander at her.

It could be a lot of things. She could of ruptured the ACL on that side, she could of ruptured the achilles tendon. Have her hips been x-rayed before? She could of popped that hip out of joint even. Or she could of fractured something in the hock or stifle. Keep her crated and down to keep her off of it until you get into the vet. You can try Bufferin with her.

Shes been humping too long.. Lol, I'm just kidding, your dog probablly has what is none in both human and animal. Arthrites. You should bring her to the vet, they could fix her up in no time, they did that to my friends dog, you can also get pet-meds. Or your dog just may have a fractured bone. I hope you and your sweet dog make the best of it.

Best thing is cage rest, only out to potty and better to leash walk if possible. Do you have any pain relievers left from her ACL? Maybe Deramax or something? That would be great. Can't speculate on what she did, it could be anything.

Maybe she twisted it or sprained it. Labs are notorious for having hip problems. You might ask you vet about this. You might want to put her on a diet to help with this. Labs are such nice gentle and intelligent dogs. I had one and I miss it.
