People don't always agree. but there are some essential doctrines which make out a Christian.
The Bible itself reveals those doctrines that are essential to the Christian faith. They are 1) the Deity of Christ, 2) Salvation by Grace, and 3) Resurrection of Christ, and 4) the gospel. These are the doctrines the Bible says are necessary. Though there are many other important doctrines, these four are the only ones that are declared by Scripture to be essential.

People don't want to completely surrender their life to God so they take their own agendas to church with them. If the church doesn't fit into their idea or box of what God should be then they leave. True faith and seeking God is seeing what God wants for our life and truly listening even if that means forgiving each other and repenting of our own selfish, self centered ways. God has better and higher ideals for our life than we could ever ask or think.

Because everyone interprets the bible in a different way. You and I could read the same verse, and get two totally different understandings. A wise man once told me, that if your try hard enough, and search deep, you can make the bible say anything you want. Organized religion is a prime example of that.

I am not religious, but I am going to tell you what I think about god. I think someone made him up, the bible too. Think about it, when the bible was written, people were very gullible, they would believe anything. I think they started to believe it and it just got more and more popular. The only thing the christian religion has is the bible, hundreds of millions of people believe in god because of one book. That's it, one book, they have no proof, they have never seen him, or anything that has to do with him, no matter what they say. Plus, if Jesus can put himself on the cross and die for all mans sins, then anyone could do it.

Some sects believe you have to do more than believe in God to be considered a 'real' Christian.

i.e. one has to be homophobic, against the killing of what is simply a mass of cells, against birth control, etc, etc.
