THe equivalent of the US National Academy of Sciences in Britain (including all western European nations including Canada and parts of the Middle east such as pakistan and india) is the Royal Soceity. Or better known as the Fellows of the Royal Society(FRS).

Cornwell and Stirrat study of the religious beliefes of the FRS

This elite society consists of exactly 1,074 Fellows of the Royal Society, all possesing an email adress. All where polled.
23% responded (good figure for this kind of study)
They were offered varios propositions for example: "i believe in a personal God, that is one who takes an interest in individuals, hears and answers prayers, is concerned with sin and transgressions and pass judgement."
They were to choose from 1 (strong disagreement) to 7 (strong Agreement)

The trend correlated strongly with the much larger study of the US National Academy of Sciences

The over wheliming majority of FRS, like the overwheliming majority of the US academicians, are athiests. Only 3.3 percent of the fellows afreed strongly (7) with the statement that a personal god exists. While 78.8 percent strongly disagreed (1).

If you define believers as those who chose 6 or 7 and unbelievers as a 1 or 2 on the scale, there were a massive 213 unbelievers and a mere 12 beliervers.

They also found in a seperate study that a small but signifcant tendency for biological snientists to be even more atheistic than physical scientist.

If you want the details and all the rest of their very exciting conclusions please refer to their own paper:

I am looking for intelligent and mature responses. That by far does not fit this critieria, infact just helps me concede the point. Please, if this is your attempt at converting me, you should be ashamed at such a feeble and lazy attempt.

Remember the extreme response was 7. The answers such as 6 and 5 were not as extreme, and would still classify themselves as believers.

Spiritual intelligence and Scientific intelligence are two different magiseria. Hence the use of NOMA. Scientific Intelligence is based on fact while spiritual is well not... rather its based on abstract and opinion of faith.

If you take a survey of people who are more intelligent than spiritual of course the result will skew for the intelligent rather than the spiritual. The result is self-fulfilling. If you take a survey confined to those who are truly spiritual and know God the result will be different. The survey merely shows the percentage of people who majored in intelligence knowing God. It just proves that it takes spiritual discernment and not intelligence to know the reality of God.

well, like in most surveys,, unfortunately the question asked of them would perhaps direct their answer,,,,, if you /they had asked "do you believe in a personal God,,,,," the answers i am sure would be different,,,,, that survey only shows they disagree with the whole intire question,,,,, a personal God who,,,,,,,,is concerned with passing judgments,,,,,,,along with all the other things listed,,,,,

i believe in God, yet i would of strongly disagreed with that question,,,,

at the same time, yes perhaps more of that group do not believe in a God,,,, but no one would know unless they are asked that, and just that! and, at the same time, that fact would have no real bearing on if there is a God,,, its like asking people who believe in reincarnation if there is a God,, you would get a large percentage who said yes,,,, because that is a very limited group,,, who might do the opposite of a scientist (who feel they must prove) , a reincarnationist might have no need to prove anything,,,,,
ps: duft, you could still get an extreme response if someone only disagreed with one part of that statement,,,,,, there is no way to know,,, if someones extreme response was triggered by a factor of that complicated question,,,,,,, why wouldnt they of asked simply,,,, do you believe in a god? then further defined it by listing all of those qualifications for what a god,,, God , is ???

Exod 20:1-17
1And God spoke all these words:
2"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3"You shall have no other gods before me.
4"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
6but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7"You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
9Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.
11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
13"You shall not murder.
14"You shall not commit adultery.
15"You shall not steal.
16"You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

It does make sense.
The schizoid delusional fanatics will not love you for spreading this kind of information and their love for science will probably get another blow.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster will keep wiggling though, for our delight.
