For starters, the type of yeast that is used.
Porters, Stout's and all ales are made with ale yeast, which
is top fermenting and works well at room temp.

Lagers (Pilsner is a style of lager) are brewed with lager yeast which works well at cooler temps. The word lager is German and
means "to store". Lagers are aged at cool temps to develop their
signature smoothness.

Another difference is the type of grains that are used.
Stout gets its color from the use of roasted barley.
Porter uses black patent or chocolate malt (or both)

Pale ales are generally hoppier (more bitter) than other varieties of ale (IPA is a style of pale ale)

Macro beers = commercial brewery such as Bud, Miller, etc.

Least offending ? Matter of personal taste, but if your just starting
out, try a German lager such as Paulaner Munich Lager.
It is a traditional smooth German beer.

American beers (the big guys) use a combination of rice/corn
in addition to barley in their malt. Beers such as Michelob, Miller,
etc. are lighter in body and flavor than their German counterparts.
