Before anyone else says it- alcohol does * not* 'rot' the brain. In psychology, now, it is widely accepted, now that studies have actually been done, that the brains of alcoholics and T-totals are exactly the same size. Zero, 'rotting'.

Alochol is one of those things , its a personal choice and for some people has nothing to do with religion. Some people just don't like the way that it makes them feel. Some people do. Like some people like weed , some don't. Some like crack, some don't. Some like shrooms , some don't. Some like pills, some don't. Its a personal preference.
