Although I won't be visiting New York for the first time until next spring, I love the city of New York. I'm a follower of the phrase, "The greatest city in the world". However, I continue to hear bad stories from travelers who've visited the city even when I'm not looking for it. I know no place is perfect, but I have to wonder, am I going to be disappointed to experience that my favorite city is so fast that it's arrogant?

As a former New Yorker, I agree with the majority. New Yorkers aren't rude. Actually I have been told that they are quite nice, but the fast paced lifestyle leaves little time for chit chat with strangers. You will love the food and just the whole scene. If you are pleasant and not demanding you will not get the NY attitutde people talk about. As for cab drivers, they are okay, most speak very little English and aren't always the most honest. They may take you the LONG way around so don't act like you don't know where you are going. If you take a cab tell him the destination as if you do it all the time.

You will love NYC, it is THE City of all cities.

I honestly think that's bull crap. Lol anybody who sais that New Yorkers are rude probably just came from a very small town. I was raised in a small town and I would love love love to go to NYC. It seems amazing and just what I need. My makeup school that I want to go to is there and I cant wait. It will be a huge change for me but I think it is one worth making. ;) I never have fit in very well in the small town life. I am very private yet sweet, ill say what needs to be said though. Sounds like the place for me:)

It's not so much the place but the poeple that make one.
Newyorkers are pretty tough. After all NewYork =was tops
for being the largest or most important city in the spectrum.
I was born and raised in the second ,following NewYork at one time which would be Chicago Many people from cities are good and tough.I hear many parts of Newyork streets are total
hustle and bustle of a highway like traffic of people down the side walks.I.Theres a web cam which views live of Newyork streets.
You have to search for it.Yes NewYork may very well be fast.
But I am sure thos born and raised there are used to or made
that way. It's not like religion or anything. Why worry? I'm sure
you will have a great timein many ways inspite your fears.
Always keep an open mind ! You will have fun.

Just look at what happened on 9/11. The entire city came together as one and helped each other. I know it was a time of crisis but it definitely erased a lot of the NYC stereotype that New Yorkers are rude.

It is a fast city and even though I've been there thousands of times, I still get overwhelmed but never have I ever encountered anyone who was rude. It's a fun city!

we are not rude
new york is a place where people know who they are and where the are going and are assertive
is is so fast paced here that visitors from other places do not understand the way we think and are intimidated by the way we live
are people in small towns seen as bumbling slow and ignorant?
no do not judge by what you hear from others
people here are always willing to answer questions or give directions if asked
why do you think it is the greatest city in the world and people either flock here to visit or wish they could
it is not small town America where everyone knows and gets into everyone private business
people here maintain their private space but just as caring as anywhere else
to survive in NY you have to maintain the ebb and flow of everyday life
you will not be disappointed you will have the time of you life and a unique experience

I am a native NYC gal.

New Yorkers walk fast, talk fast, and get straight to it. NYC is ready, set, go! If you can't handle that, you won't like it here.

New York is the kind of place where people say it to your face. The rest of the world is a place where people say it behind your back. If you like things direct and to the point, then you will like it here.

I have no idea what kind of "bad stories" you hear, or what your definition of "bad" is. If your idea of a bad story is people not wanting to wait for 20 minutes while the person ahead of them in line tries to make up their mind about whether they want butter or cream cheese on their bagel ... then yeah, it's a really "bad" place to go.

No we are not. New York is big, there are a lot of people here, New Yorkers are to the point. There are a lot of different cultures here and many people don't speak English well, especially cab drivers, they are not rude they are just doing thei best to understand. Most people are very nice, just different.

My first time in NY, I was changing trains at Grand Central, and a Transit worker who was on break walked me to my correct train cause I was lost. I had great experiences with the people who live in "the Greatest City in the World"..

People in New York are different because they don't take other people's crap. As long as you're considerate and respectful, people won't mess with you. People tend to label New Yorker's in a bad way because they think that their poop doesn't stink and when someone steps up to them, they just don't know how to deal with it. My best friend was raised in New York, and she is one of the sweatest people I know. She has respect for others, kindness for strangers, and she will tell you just how it is. It's hard to find people like that.
