as what we used to in my country , the person who be the leader in praying called imam.
but sheikh can be called in many places :
the imam its self called also sheikh.
the person who help the people in their religion is sheikh.
who tells the fatwa called shiekh and also mufti.
any god-fearing person had a great knowledge in Islam called sheikh.
the old man called shiekh .
i think there is so many also :)

Mustafa tells me that an imam is someone who preaches/teaches at the mosque. A sheikh is someone who can or does do that, but in addition, gives talks and writes articles, etc. They have to do it for a while before someone calls them a sheikh. Unlike Christianity, there isn't a group that decides who gets to be a sheikh, it's more like popular opinion. As far as I know, anyone can go from imam to sheikh.

SHEIKH = the one who has excellent knowledge about ISLAM
OR the one who has alot of money

IMAM = THE ONE WHO LEADS OTHER MUSLIMS IN SALAT (THE PRAYER OF MUSLIMS)
