My uncle died on Christmas Eve because of kidney failure - for a long time now it turns out he hasn't drunk much water.

1.5 - 2 litres of water a day is the recommended amount, a bit more if you are physically active or sweat a lot.

People who don't drink enough water on a consistent basis are much more likely to suffer Alzheimer's disease, kidney problems, skin problems, mental problems (concentration, memory, etc), the list goes on.
It's really not hard to get enough water, unless you live in Ethiopia or something.

You should aim for the 6-8 glasses (also, its supposed to be CUPS, but alot of people's glasses hold alot more than a cup, so they think they need more water than they need), but not be super vigilant about it. Its fine to get a good portion of your water from other liquids (juice, tea, etc. but avoid caffeinated drinks). You can get water from all food sources (even bread has some water in it). It also depends on whether you work out alot or not, and what your size is.

You should enough water until you aren't thirsty. I'm not being a smart **s, that's really the answer. If you really like drinking a lot of water though, make sure it has some minerals in it. When people drink water that is very purified and has everything removed, you actually flush minerals and nutrients out your body whenever your kidneys filter it.

You should drink 8 glasses of water a day.
One glass of water is considered 250mL.
So, that equates to 2 litres of water a day.

more is always better then not enough because not enough can leave you dehydrated and fatigued you would rather be water logged than in the hospital looking at the ceiling
