Together in a letter would mean undetermined as in either or.MIA would be typical unless there were witnesses of an alleged planned defection or desertion. I doubt they would say this in a letter during combat duty though. I wouldn't defect or desert if I were in Iraq unless I was able to assume an identity and blend in as in with news corespondents. What a living nightmare though for soldiers and their families.

missing in action and I don't know what awol stands for but I know its the term for someone who leaves or quits the army without a discharge and they haven't been caught yet, they are usually being sought by the military police
