I used to breed dogs, so first, DON'T PANIC! If she suddenly feels uncomfortable about her whelping place, she CAN stop her labor for a time. It will start again as soon as she is comfortable. Make sure she has a dimly lit, quiet place away from family, kids and traffic areas. You can be there with her but don't handle the pups too much as she may abandon them for you to take care of or try to move them somewhere you can't get to them.
You can help her deliver them if she gets very tired from having a large litter. It won't even hurt her to get up and walk around. She will move herself occasionally to get more comfortable. Make sure she has some clean water to drink while whelping and make her go out to use the bathroom an hour or so after she's done.
BTW, she DOES NOT have a puppy stuck. In that situation, the labor does not stop. As a matter of fact, it gets harder because her body is trying to push it out. (Her labor stopped and she's not pushing.) If you can tell she's laboring very hard - you'll know the difference - then call the vet.
Like I said, don't panic. I've whelped dozens of healthy litters, even had to do mouth-to-mouth to help some take their first breath. This is not unusual for dogs or cats if disturbed while delivering.
Good luck and enjoy those pups!

whining panting and digging are all normal behaviour when whelping is close. This dosnt mean labour has actually started. You will see the dogs body contract when a puppy is due to be born. She will be restless, panting and it will look like her tummy is being sucked in when she is starting to push. when this happens if no puppy is born within an hour get the vet there may be a blockage. After one puppy is born she may rest for a while before it starts again or 2 or 3 may come at once. If it is a large dog you need to move puppies that have been born over to one side so she dosnt stand on them while birthing the next one. When they are born she should clean them but do make sure the membranes are off the pups face asap so they can breath. Also get them suckling straight away.

No it can not. Even if the puppy inside it is dead, there is no way that it could just stay in the dog. It has to come out whether alive or whether dead. The thing is that this might just have been a lot of kicking from the puppies in her, which is very common as labor comes near. The best thing to do is have all the necessary supplies ready soon because she will probably be in labor in a couple of weeks, maybe days.

You need to visit the vet as soon as possible. You need to find out if all the pups are viable at this point. She needs to be checked. For her sake and for the dogs. You don't want to take a chance that she will loose the litter and possibly her life. At the very least call the vet.

If her labor has started and she has not produced any puppies yet, you need to get her to the vet NOW! Labor does not usually stop and start, something is probably wrong.
If she is acting fine, are you sure that she started labor (and that she is pregnant)? I would take her temperature (rectally, just get a thermometer and put some petroleum jelly on it, insert into the rectum, and leave for 2 minutes or until it beeps if using digital) and if it is normal (100.5 to 102.5) then she is probably okay. If it is below 99 she should start labor in the next 24 hours and if it is above 102.5 call the vet. She also may be having a false pregnancy (which is fairly common) unless you are positive she is pregnant. My friend's Afghan Hound had a false pregnancy and she had milk and went through "labor" even though she had not been bred.

my dog did the same thing last night.she is now fine and not in distress. She acted the same way you are describing then i was all excited and after about 2 hours she laid on my bed and went to sleep. She doesn't seem uncomfortable,no pup is stuck, she is fine,if you are that concerned take her to the vet.I called my vet and she said she could do that for a week before she delivers,I also called the breeder where i purchased the father of the pups and he said as long as there is no buldging between the rectum and the vagina, she is fine.If she seems comfortable and her temp is normal she is fine.Maybe there is some doggie "who can drive their owner nuts and have a new year litter"compitition

labour can often last 3 days on and off, but i guess that she will start again within 24 hours, if nothing by 36 hours it would be worth ringing the vet for advice.
Make sure she has plenty of water and food if she wants it as often they wont get out to get a drink.
we have just had 2 litters over xmas and it took one of the girls 4 days of digging panting and scratching before she had her babies and they are all well and fine no problems at all, they are just like humans to be honest, we can start contractions then give up for a week!!
Good luck and i hope you have a lovely litter for new year

I had a dog that seemed to be cramping a few times over a few days before she finally had her pups. She just had a big litter that she ended up needing help with. Since you don't know what happened, call your Vet and tell him or her what happened. Just to be sure she will be okay.

If the waters have broken, all the puppies will be in danger. Get her to a Vet as soon as possible, or at least phone for advice. If you are fond of her, treat her as you would a friend or relative, and get help
