These persons also receive
five intramuscular
doses of vaccine over the next 28 days.

Persons who are exposed to a rabid animal but have been previously vaccinated
require only two booster doses of vaccine three
days apart.

Vaccines

Three human rabies vaccines are currently licensed by FDA for U.S. use:

Human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV), or Imovax, is the most widely used vaccine. It is produced in cultures of normal human diploid cells by Pasteur Merieux, a French company. Pasteur Merieux's pre- and postexposure intramuscular HDCV vaccines were approved in 1980, while an intradermal preexposure HDCV vaccine was approved for use in 1988.
A vaccine made by a Michigan state agency, Michigan Biologic Products Institute, uses fetal rhesus monkey cell cultures. It was approved for use in 1988 and is distributed outside of Michigan by Smith Kline Beecham.
Inactivated diploid cell origin (DCO), a dried vaccine made by Connaught Laboratories in Toronto, Canada, was approved for use in 1991.

Information from a recipient of the rabies shots in December 2006 says they are a series of shots in the stomach, they are painful and not covered by insurance.

Their dog was attacked by a rabid raccoon and they cleaned up the dog and had to get the shots.

If you have been exposed do get the shots. Keep cats and dogs vaccinated. Try to get the questionable rabid animal or corpse to a vet for examination if possible

It's the arm now. If you think you've been exposed do not hesitate to seek treatment immediatly. Once symptoms start there is no cure. The animal does not have to break your skin or be alive to transmit the virus to you, and the virus exists in bodily fluids other than saliva as well.

I hope you never have to get them. Here's a facinating story about a girl who survived rabies:
