Neanderthals were humans by any definition. They were more different than a 'race' but less so than a 'species'. In fact, if they were able to have fertile offspring with modern humans, then we -are- the same species.
Human ancestry is very complicated because primitive people tended to stay in groups isolated by oceans and mountain ranges, and drift apart from each other- but they went wandering every so often and interbred with other groups before they had a chance to actually speciate.
I suspect that our ancestors were not more intelligent than the Neanderthals, only more vicious and territorial.

I honestly think that interbreeding between modern man and Neanderthal man is the reason the latter became extinct. I don't think Neanderthals just up and died...They bred with modern man and are part of who we are today. I don't think there has been much if any in the way of fossil evidence to back this up, but it makes perfect sense to me. As far as it being beastial sex, its no different than a horse breeding with a donkey.

Donkeys can mate with Horses and even produce hybrid offspring. Neanderthals and modern Humans were more similar to each other, and there is genetic evidence that Neanderthals did crossbreed with modern Humans in the past.

i'm sure sex happened but it'd have to be male neanderthal rape of female homo sapiens. to the latter, the former would have looked v primitive.
