Haven't flown in years, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.

When you want to watch a movie on the airplane, do you have to buy special headsets on the plane (how much do they cost?), or are they provided for free?

Can you plug in any standard headset, like for an mp3 player?

Thanks, any help is appreciated!

Unfortunately, there's no simple answer to this question.

Some airlines use standard single-prong stereo headphone jacks. Others use two-prong ones of various designs.

Some airlines provide headphones free, others charge for them, and others charge even if you bring your own.

And in cases where there is a charge, the amount of the charge varies.

Of course, this presumes you're even on a flight that has audio or movies; aircraft used for flights shorter than 4 hours may not even have headphone jacks at all. :)

For international flights, flight attendants will pass out headsets
at the beginning of the flight.

For domestic, they make you rent it ... for 3 or 5 dollars depending on the lengh of your flight. From California to DC, one pays for the headset.

The headset does look a little different than normal though.

The headset are provided for free. Your personal headset will not work unless you can fine headset adaptor somewhere that will fit for airplane.

Sometimes your headset will fit - take both a one and two prong adapter

II flew Delta and they only charged $2 for a headset - and you get to keep it!

they are provided free by the air steward/ stewardess. just ask them for one. U normally plug in this headset at the side of the airplane seat. or you can ask the stewardess where to plug it in to watch a movie/ listen to music.
