When it comes to weight training variety is key. If you want to simply tone rather than add muscle mass the choose a weight that you can lift with proper form for 12-15 repetitions (Don't forget to warm up before you push yourself). You will need to do 1-2 exercises per body part or you can do Olympic and power-lifting style exercises which will work your whole body in less time. Don't be concerned with these exercises adding bulk, as long as you keep your reps relatively high you'll tone up in no time. Whatever your goals don't forget proper nutrition, to do some cardio and get sufficient rest.

Lighter weights, more reps. If you are unsure, go to a health club and ask about an introductory session with a personal trainer. Most do this for free or very little money, and you can get some good tips from a professional.
