I've never been able to get linux to connect to anything other than dial up even though I've been told its all easy to do.

Just go for a test run. Download an Ubuntu Live CD (link below). You burn it to a CD and restart your computer. It'll load to a Linux environment and you can play from there to see how you like it and if you can connect to the internet. If you don't like it, no harm, just remove the CD and restart your computer and you'll be back in Windows 98 like nothing happened.

Routers have nothing to do with your software actually. The wireless adapter you will install in your computer is what you should be concerned with. If you find an adapter you are interested in goto the makers web site and ask thier customer service rep if they have linux drivers for that adapter....

A wireless router is a stand alone device that uses standard protocols such as TCP/IP and 54g.

As long as Linux supports the protocols you need which it almost certainly will then you should be fine.

That's a simple question to answer. The thing I would worry about more is does Linux have a compatilbe driver for your LAN card.

Depending on the distro of Linux you use it may be easier or harder to set up. You really would have the check the website out for the distro you are going to use to get detailed directions on how to set it up.
