For getting rid of flab, would running 8 miles at a 6-7 mile minute rate be more or less beneficial than running 5 mile at a slower rate in the same hour?

In my personal opinion, from books I've read about cardio fitness, the best way to go about intensity levels is to vary them. For example, go 5 mph for a bit, then kick it up a notch to get your blood pumping, then when you're tired but not exhausted, bring it back down to 5 mph. Then keep doing that for ... well, I'd only go for 30 - 40 minutes, but however long you feel comfortable but not too overworked.

I don't think it's the time or distance but the speed at which you're going. Obviously if you cover a longer distance during the same period of time you would be doing more work so just divide the distance you want to cover (e.g: 5 miles), by the time you need to cover it (e.g: an hour/ 60 minutes).
So, 5/60 = 0.08 miles per minute
and 8/60= 0.13 miles per minute

So the best solution is covering a larger distance, not reducing the time. ( Remember to pace yourself when running though, it can be pretty tiring... And do your stretches )
Good Luck :)

well- for flab you want to have a long time-

You would be surprised that you really don't have to work as hard as you think you have to!

I was killing myself because I thought I HAD to kill myself to make any difference, but what you really want to do is get your heart rate in your target range and keep it here as long as you can

target heart rate:

I found that I was trying TOO hard and not going long enough, I lessed up and went longer. (I was hoping I wasn't going to pass out on the sidewalk before I made it home on my first time out)

They say a minimum of 20, perferred at 30 minutes, but too much when you get at an hour (unless you are a marathon runner. :) )

I got a heart monitor (the one that goes around your chest, and then a watch- looking thing on your wrist) then I never had to wonder if I was pushing hard enough. (I don't like any other type of heart monitor because they tend to fail to read at times.)

Do what ever works for you.

You will burn more calories running faster, but you keep more muscle with a slower cardio. I dunno, it depends on body type really. If you are just fat and want to lose weight, then just burn as many calories as you can, so run your friggin **** off. If you wanna keep some mass, then just slow it down. However, none of this will matter if your diet sucks. Get that in check first.

Actually, it doesn't really matter the pace. However, if you train and start running faster, it's better for your overall health and running will be less strenuous. Exercise is key for losing weight.

the farther the better, actually. but hon only the slowest metabolisms wouldn't respond to even a 5 mile run!

well running faster gets your heart healthier faster. but endurance is good too. if you can't run as fast then go for distance. you want to be able to keep a steady pace and not feel like you're gonna die after.

The most important thing is to keep a steady pace, if you do that you will be able to run longer.

The fast the better. The more muscles used the better. GOOD LUCK.
