So: Earlier this evening while I was at work, my mother decided to make her first attempt at trimming my lab's nails. She went about it with no experience or knowledge, and used the guillotine clippers.
I come home tonight, only to find blood streaks on the floor of her room, and my mother's story that the dog pulled away, causing them to have pulled out one of her nails entirely.
I've suggested taking her to a vet, and this has been taken into consideration. Has this happened to anyone else?

I think it'll be fine...

If the dog isn't acting like it's in pain now, it's probably okay.

If the dog IS in pain, I'd take her to be checked out.

I highly doubt she pulled the whole nail out, that is pretty near impossible. What your mom probably did was cut to close and got the quick.. Put some septic powder on it to stop the bleeding if it hasn't already quit.

Or apply pressure with a clean rag. It will quit bleeding.. I HATE doing nails, I am always afraid I will cut them to close.. I have the groomer do my dogs mostly.. But I also do it to, I just don't cut to much and I wear reading glasses so I can see really close, and BRIGHT light;-)

Take the dog to the vet asap & to heck with the costs. If your not sure, it can only get worse. For all you know it is bleeding inside the dogs paw or you could let the dog out to use the bathroom & wonder why it isn't coming back, besides the infection factor. It pays in this case to err on the side of caution. Good luck & hope she is better soon.

I had this happen with my doberman in the past and they bleed like crazy! I would make sure the bleeding stops and if it doesn't then you need to take her to the vet. Nail problems in dogs can bleed heavily and if you dont get it taken care of them the dog could develop some complications. I would say use your own judgement but if she is still bleeding then take her in.

dip the dogs paw in flour to help clot the bleeding if it hasn't already then take him to the vet it should be ok til tueday morning my biggest fear would be infection let the dog like it as much as he wants to that will help the healing process i'd like to know how hard your mom was pulling on the clippers because i've had dogs and groomed dogs and this never happen to me or any of my pets.

cant do that with out seriously hurting the dog. did she just cut the quick or did she really pull out a nail. go see a vet to get stiches so the paw wont get infected.

Let a vet treat the open spot so that it won't get infected. After that if she needs her nails clipped, let the vet do it.

take the lab to vet. it could bleed to death... or use boric acid from wal mart to stop the bleeding. tell her not to go past the black part on the nails. if she cant see it then don't go so short. wish the dog luck. she better go to vet next time...poor pooch!!!
