that is a tough one....

maybe ...a xm satellite with a Mp3 player built in..my son just got one for Christmas...it is actually smaller than my other sons 5th generation Ipod...the difference between this and the Ipod ..is it has over a hundred commercial free radio channels on it..it gets all the sports ..news ...and music of all kinds and from every era...and he can record the songs right off the radio ..he don't have to go on line to buy music or even use a computer for it... they can be rather pricey....at circuit city they ran 349. but we found one at walmart for 249. this was the pioneer..samsung (probably misspelled )makes one and I believe it is a little less......it cost around 70 dollars for a year service ...so your looking at a little of 300. dollars......but again ,you don't have to purchase music through an one line store.....

You might want to try Amateur Radio. Find a ham radio club in your town (EVERY town has one). Go to a monthly meeting and ask the same question you've asked here. How would you like to talk to astronauts on the International Space Station? Hams do it all the time, in fact all the astronauts have ham radio licences.
Send e-mail thru a satellite WITHOUT your own internet connection. Talk to other hams thru a satellite with just a walkie-talkie. The FCC just changed the rules and eliminated Morse code requirements for a licence. My 8-year old son passed the test.

What about a GPS? Pretty cool if the teen is into gadgets. This pulls in satellite signals to determine your position to within 8 meters.

Try to get one with SiRF3 chipset.

Most popular brand in US is Garmin.

- stereo with cd's
- outdoor equipment: volleyball, trampoline, basketball, etc
- cell phone with games and music
- mini dvd player
- electronic planner (PalmPilot, etc)

I dunno... hard question if you don't want an ipod.. maybe take a walk through Curcuit City or something with a teen to get the best answer.
