He is 16 and claims that they are "comfortable". How do I explain that this is unacceptable?

The fact that it is called a wifebeater really bothers me. I don't see why this doesn't bother anyone else. I would think that women would be offended. My son obviously doesn't respect women. The manufacture of the shirt should be banned, in my opinion.

What is unacceptable about his choice at 16 to wear an undershirt to bed? Leave the kid alone.

OK so the name isn't all that great, its sucks actually.

After looking up what they were I had to laugh. WHY do you have a problem with this shirt? Besides the name?

He's wearing it to bed because they are comfortable. You would rather him have an uncomfortable sleep thus interfering with his studies and chores and attitude instead of being comfortable and falling asleep?

Perhaps try a compromise as some have suggested. Find tank tops like that in different colors and see if they are comfortable for him, if they are then he can wear those.

Why do you think of it as unacceptable? Is it because of what they are called? If it is then just call them muscle shirts. I am a female and I sleep in wifebeaters, they are very comfortable. If he is an overall good son and student then don't worry too much about what he is sleeping in.

not to be rude or anything but your son wearing a wifebeater to bed should be the least of your worries. i'm pretty sure there is something going on in his life much more important than wearing a wifebeater to bed that needs to be addressed. as a parent i have learned to let the small things go and focus on more important things.

To help both of your issues with the shirt, buy him some regular tank tops same style in different colors, I think they come in blue & black, then it's not a typical "wifebeater" I know what you mean by the shirt being labeled. I would feel uncomfortable with it if my son wore them as well. But, as long as it was only to bed and not out in public, I think I could get over it.

He should be able to be comfortable when he sleeps. at least he's not sleeping in the nude. If this happens then you have an issue. But wearing a "wifebeater" to bed is not a problem that needs to be discussed.

Hello =)

What is "unacceptable" about wearing them to bed??

Many teen boys sleep in their boxers and that's it....

The term "wifebeater" comes from the stereotypical "hell's kitchen" male, in NYC, who wore them under open dress shirts. These men were stereotyped as being "wife-beaters"...

There are also womens A-shirts, that are now called "boybeaters"..... so, I really don't see your objection to the terminology...

Or do you prefer him to sleep without clothes?

Namaste, and Happy New Year,

--Tom

Why is it unacceptable? It is just a T-shirt and they are comfortable. Teach your son the correct way to be with women...the shirt has nothing to do with the man.

What is the problem? WHY is it unacceptable? It's just a tank top...someone somewhere thought up a funny name for that type of tank top, but that doesn't mean he's going to start beating on women just because he wears clothing to bed. This question is wild...
