My mother's formal mahogany dining set (circa 1957) has a table with matching chairs, a china cabinet and a buffet. We keep the "good" china and crystal in the china cabinet's display shelves (with extra pieces in the bottom cupboards). The buffet has 3 drawers, and the lower two hold table linens & extra tapered candles in boxes, as well as some silver serving trays, and the top drawer is divided and lined with a velvety material (probably originally designed to be tarnish resistant) for the silver flatware and serving pieces. We keep a hand painted chocolate service on top of the buffet as part of the room's decor.
Hope this helps!

They are for laying out extra food that doesn't fit on the table during big meals, storing table cloths, napkins and place mats. The "good" silverware and china. Weird stuff like corn cob holders, shell fish eating devices, etc.

People used to used them in the olden days they are for storing your plates, silverware, glasses, linens, etc. They used to put the good china and such in them and lock them when they weren't being used mostly wealthy people had them as they where the only people that could afford two sets of dinner ware. they also held some of the spices, some had a place for ice or pictures of water,or other beverages.
