I think they can, but would find they probably weren't that religious or devoted. They may look at it differently from the critical point of view (rather than an Athiest, etc) but I still think they can look at it critically. Same with any other religion.

A devoted Christian no. Being a Christian is not just about what you read in a bible; it's also your personal faith and your feelings that you have when you believe in God. The bible is not Jesus himself. It is a book written by men who had some sort of relaitonship with Christ. It helps you to understand that the trials you go through, many men before you have gone through the same thing and it tries to teach you how to over come. You won't always understand everything that is written in the bible or why this or that happened. It's very complimented such as the creation of life. I too have a hard time with quite a few things of the bible. I can't say that I believe everything that's written in the bible but I do believe that there is one creator. I hope that you are blessed in the end.
God Bless.

Many can not. I did in my college classes on Religious Studies. I got my degree at a secular University, not at a seminary, and we did look at everything from a critical perspective and not from a theological one. The Fundamentalist had the most difficult time in those classes. I am an Episcopalian, so it was easier for me. I think the strong Fundamentalist view of the bible can cause some to fall away after careful study, but it shouldn't. It should only bring a person to a more "enlightened" faith, perhaps in a different denomination.

Sure, we all do this before we accept what we have read. Even though it is in the Bible christians still weigh out things and most find it to be true or beneficial. That is one of the reasons why Christianity and the Belief in God has lasted so long without it becoming extinct but on the contrary, it has flourished and spread thoughout the world.

Oh Yes!
I'm sure it can and has been done before.
Some people leave the religion, but continue to read the bible critically, and decide Jesus was okay, but the religious thing could go.
Everybody does it differently!
It's all Good!

I believe some religious people can be more objective than others. I am sorry to hear that you left Jesus. Even though you have turned from your belief Jesus will be there for you if you choose to return. It seems as though you still believe since you can't turn away from something that doesn't exsist.

Can you read ANY written works with the same perspective?
Would you not eat a cake you baked if you over criticized the recipe?

It would be refreshing. But it is hard to argue with beliefs. I wish we could just put them all together and create some tolerance. Religion is like PETA....a GREAT idea ruined by a few psychos.
