I have a really bad gag reflex when I take pills. A lot of times I choke, and some times I have even thrown up. What has helped me is to take my pills with a strong flavored drink. I use soda, chocolate milk, something like that. I take the pill as fast as I can while drinking. I hope this helps.

First of all, are your pills too big for you to swallow? If you can, cut them into smaller pieces. You can't do this if it's a pill that is like a capsule and has ingredients inside the capsule. If that's not possible, here is my suggestion. I have been having trouble swallowing pills recently, too. I think it's because I take 11 pills 4 times a day. I have severe medical problems and will be getting a pain pump implanted in a couple of weeks (I am so looking forward to that!). Anyway, what I have found to get them down is this. You may have to swallow only 1 pill at a time. Put the pill in your mouth, then get a drink of water. Hold them in your mouth and then tilt your head down and place your chin on your chest and swallow. It sounds impossible to do and that they will fall out of your mouth, but they won't. It helps you swallow them very easily. I hope this works for you. I can now take all 11 pills at one time by doing this. I thought this person was crazy who told me how to do this, until the first time I did it. No more gagging or spitting up the pills or getting them caught in my throat. Best of luck to you! Happy swallowing!!

My son had to start taking pills when he was 6 years old. I remember yelling at him because he couldn't swallow it and was 'waisting' pills. Finally we came up with taking them with food. Anything works, he would just take a bite of whatever he was having for breakfast and then just before he would swallow it, open his mouth and pop the pill in and swallow it down with his food. Your brain recognizes that you are eating and need to swallow and it turns off the gag reflex. If that doesn't work then maybe see if there is a liquid form of the medicine you are taking. It might be in a lower dose, so you would have to take more, but if that is the only way you can take it then maybe the benefits out way the other consequences (i.e higher price).

Hope you find a solution that works for you!!

I have to give meds to elderly people & some of them have trouble with pills. If it's a gel capsule tilt your head slightly forward & the capsule will float to the top of your mouth making it easier to swallow. For a solid pill take a gulp of water first to moisten the inside of your mouth then a few big gulps one after the other. Think about how thirsty you are & try to ignore there's a pill in your mouth. Certain meds can be crushed & mixed with pudding or something but I think the taste is awful. Other meds are available in liquid form. Good luck!

You might want to try chewing up some soft food, crackers, or cake or something, into a soft pulp. When you're tempted to swallow, hold off. Push that gob of chewed-up whatever to the front of your mouth, stick the pill into it, and THEN swallow. Following it immediately with a good swallow of liquid (water, milk, or your favorite beverage) will help it all go down easier. Myself, I only have trouble swallowing large, uncoated pills. They tend to stick to my throat! So for them, that's the method I use.

I hold my head back and throw the pill back to the back of my throat and make sure I have water to swallow. I keep tossing my head back and swallowing until the pill is gone. Make sure you always have everything in your hand ready to swallow, i.e. pill, water, and head tossed back.

No joke--whatever pill you have, it can be crushed, like into fine powder and "ingested" via straw. See where I'm going with this? It REALLY is safe, because I too take pills and hate the feeling like it's stuck in my throat, even when it's not.

put the pills on the back of your tongue and drink lots of water after swallowing them.

Depending on what you are taking, you can crush it up and put it in to food, or dissolve it in a drink.
(talk to your pharmacist about whether or not the drug can be crushed). If it is a slow release tablet, or is "enteric-coated" it cannot be.
