I know a lady who owns a arctic wolf because it was mistreated a puppy at the zoo. (The keepers petted it too much and it became docile.)

So don't write off your dream so quickly. If you happen to work with animals or just get really lucky it could happen. It is highly unlikely that you will get a penguin unless you work with animals or the humane society, or are a friend of someone who works at a zoo.

Who knows? Maybe somwhere there is a baby penguin who has spraddle legs or is deemed unfit for his habitat and the next best thing is for him to find a suitable home elsewhere. Don't forget thats you'd probably have to make your backyard into a penguin habitat, which wouldn't be cool for cookouts and the neighbors would probably think your were off your rocker.

I do think its illegal and to own a penguin anywhere in the US. I mean I guess if you live in Alaska and one wanders into your yard, it would probably be ok to name it, but other than that, pretty sure its illegal. I agree that it would be cool (no pun intended) to have a penguin, but he/she would be pretty miserable. I live in New Mexico and in the southern part of the state we have a zoo with Penguins that live in one of those plastic dog igloos and its really sad. Take a trip to a Canadian Wild Life Preserve and visit a penguin or sponsor one at a local zoo!

A penquin is a wild animal and as such local government probably prohibits keeping them. They would probably have some fees or licenses that you must purchase, if they'd permit you keeping them at all.

They don't make good pets and keeping one tanked up would as cruel as a bird in a dark box, they need to swim more than they need to walk and you cant get fresh seafood as they do.

I always wanted a pet Rhino !

They are normally sold in the same section as Kiwi Birds, Dinosaurs, and Dodos. Wait... speaking of Dodos...

And why would you want to take a pack bird and selfishly own one? Get a domestic animal and stop it. No, I have no idea. Go visit them where they live and are happy just as they are.
