Very little is known about yawning, but it is very contageous!! simply READING or HEARING the word "YAWN" will cause people to yawn. Chances are you will yawn at least 3 time before you read the end of my answer. However, there are a few facts about yawning that are interesting:
1.The average duration of a yawn is about 6 seconds.
2. In humans, the earliest occurrence of a yawn happens at about 11 weeks after conception - that's BEFORE the baby is born!
3. Yawns become contagious to people between the first and second years of life.
4. A part of the brain that plays an important role in yawning is the hypothalamus. Research has shown that some neurotransmitters (for example, dopamine, excitatory amino acids, nitric oxide) and neuropeptides increase yawning if injected into the hypothalamus of animals.

I heard it was some sort of instinctual group belonging thing for humans. Here's what wikipedia said: ...proposed as a driving force for Imitation which lies at the root of much human learning, e.g. language acquisition. Yawning may be an offshoot of the same imitative impulse. At a distal level (in terms of evolutionary advantage), yawning might be a herd instinct.[5] Other theories suggest that the yawn serves to synchronize mood behavior among gregarious animals, similar to the howling of the wolf pack during a full moon. It signals tiredness to other members of the group in order to synchronize sleeping patterns and periods of activity.

Hey! It happens to me, too! But, I notice if I yawn next to a toddler, it will not yawn. I think this does not affect children under 5 yo.

Boredom, for the most part due to idleness is contagious given the right atmosphere.
It would be hard for you to yawn if you are cramming to pass a deadline, or just plain busy.
On other thoughts, it might just be a conditioned stimuli, much like a smoker reacts at seeing another individual light a cigarette.
