So here is my system that I currently have

http://cgi.ebay.com/Philips-DVD-Home-Theater-System-6x115Watts-HTS3400_W0QQitemZ160066097520QQcmdZViewItem

I was wondering if I am going to have any problems adding a older receiver to it so that everything works properly. I will be connecting the receiver to my tv, x box 360, and the dvd player system. Or should I just get a whole new theater system which already includes a receiver. Any help is appreciated.

Well here's the thing-- this system is referred to as an home theater in a box (HTIB), which offers a consumer an all-in-one sound package for an affordable price. They're not right for everyone, and frankly, don't give great sound quality. Now, the main hindrance on the HTIB's are the inability to expand and it's non-versatility. That main console is your DVD player, CD player, AM/FM tuner, receiver and amplifier. Basically, it's the brain. This means you cannot expand off it or add a new receiver or, in many cases, use those speakers paired with a different receiver (confliction of Ohms impedance).
In short, as long as you have enough inputs to support audio from your source and xbox, you're fine. If you want the ability to expand off of a system, I recommend upgrading to a receiver separate from DVD player console.

I hope this helps!

If it is a fairly new receiver run HDMI cables from everything to the receiver and then one HDMI cable from the receiver's output to the TV set. If it is an older receiver you will have to run separate video cables to the TV set and digital audio cables to the receiver.
