I don't mean necessarily his execution, but just in general. Why would you support a person who oppressed his own people?

Carm - what irony? I didn't even bring up God - you did!

Well, not all of them were oppressed. I'm sure many people benifited and even those who didn't, at least there was some stability in the country, unlike right now. There was order, if there was violence then it was brutally crushed but now, it's dangerous everywhere, even just to go to the store to buy food.

I don't support him, but I can understand how some might have. Stability is very attractive, but stability at the barrel of a gun .... Well at least if it wasn't pointed at you.

People supported Saddam for the same reasons that people support George W Bush -- because they think it's in their interest to do so. Or that it's contrary to their interests not to.

You could just as well ask why anybody would support Bush? He also oppresses his own people. Spending hundreds of billions of dollars on the Iraq empire building adventure and losing the respect and good will of the most of the world is arguably oppressive to U.S. citizens. Yet many people are deceived into believing that this war is in their best interests. Or that we'd be less secure without the Iraq invasion.

It depends. if you were one of the higher ups in his government than you supported him because he was where your bread was buttered. Even if you weren't you didn't so much support him as much as you did go along to get along lest you wind up being tortured in a prison or killed on the spot. Many people here root for Hussein because they're spoiled punks who have no clue just how bad it was over there and think they got it rough here just because wal-mart doesn't carry the latest Green Day CD.

We Americans are spoiled. Many people would be shocked to learn the rest of the world doesn't work like America. Here you can Mother f--- Bush all you want and say whatever you want about him but if you tried something similar in Hussein's regime, Nazi Germany, or Soviet Russia you did so at your own peril because one slip of the tongue to the wrong person meant death or imprisonment. That's still the case in many third world countries now.

You should ask our very government. We supported Saddam, helped him gain power, supplied his military, used him to engage in conflicts with Iran, Saddam was a puppet, and like all puppets once they stop doing what you want them to do you dispose of them. Not a new story at all, the US government has done it time and time again in many parts of the world.

The irony in your statement is sickening.

Saddam oppresses people, and you know who else does? God.

This might get me some negative feedback, but it's true. God tells you what to do pretty much. He oppresses you from doing what you want.

Admit it, there are things you would like that the bible says no too. The bible makes God sound like a oppressive, hateful, power-hungry, dick.

Talking about the Iraqi ppl, they supported him because they were afraid of him. He's a violent guy and he could kill them for opposing him. I'm sure this isn't true of every case but for some of them.

Why do people support any fascist dictator?

The feeling of being part of "the winning team", I think.

It's called brainwashing. People who support his ways have known nothing else really.
