'he who spares the rod hates his son - but he who loves him disciplines him promptly' is how mine reads -

BUT REMEMBER - a Shepherd uses a rod to steer his sheep-not to beat them.

If you don't care /aren't willing to step up enough to help train your kids in a way that will lead to a happier more fulfilling life, it doesn't seem too loving! Ultimately, it is the child's choice, but the parent's responsibility is when they are young, to keep them on the right path.

My parents don't make me do anything really, I stay out of trouble by myself. I got spanked a couple times when I was a little kid but that's about all it took...I'm not like a brat or anything, and I'm obviously not dead yet. They must have done something right.

Basically they just let me work through things myself and I'm very grateful for that. It's given me independance and strength.

Their plan backfired with my little brother though. He's spoiled and mean, and usually a pain in the @ss. He'll probably grow up to be my groundskeeper or something.

I say that it's next to impossible to hate your own child, and discipline should not be a way to measure love, because it all depends on the individual personalities of the children as to how much and what kind of discipline should be applied. Some require next to none at all, others need to be kept at close watch 24/7.

Discipline isn't always corporal, although some families feel it is the best choice for them. It's a personal decision.

However, it cannot be overlooked that discipline IS an important thing for us to teach our children. Permissiveness is not a lack of discipline, unless it is excessive and without regard for what is being permitted. And then, it may be just as much that the parent is not disciplined as it is the child.

Proverbs 3:12
because the LORD disciplines those he loves,
as a father [a] the son he delights in.

Job 5:17, 18
"Blessed is the man whom God corrects;
so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

If you allowed your child to play in the path of an on-coming car it would be because you cared little or nothing for them. We discipline our children because we love them and desire to see them succeed in life. Try to understand this bible principle in its full context and compare it with other scriptures throughout the bible to get a full picture of the way God demonstrates loving discipline on his children. Do not take it out of context.

My parents didn't spare the rod with me and I turned out wonderful, happy, productive, wholesome and not as honest as I would like, but, I'm a work in progress.

Never spare the rod.
The rod could take many shapes and forms and a good firm grounding with attached ugly chores is a great one.
Ask me how I know.

. When you do not discipline your children, you are setting them up to be disappointed in life as adults. The world will not cater to them, and they run the risk of being spoiled brats. Also try disciplining a 16 year old when all long he has gotten his way. It won't be pretty.

I don't. I also don't believe that a virgin had a kid. I don't believe any of the contradictions...
