Abraham came to a belief in God, and took upon himself the mission of teaching others of the monotheistic ideal. Abraham was even willing to suffer persecution for his beliefs. After years of enormous effort, dedication and a willingness to accept the responsibility to be God's representative in this world, God chose Abraham and his descendants to be the teachers of this monotheistic message.
In other words it is not so much that God chose the Jews; it is more accurate that the Jews (through Abraham) chose God.

My theory is that God went around to lots of men and asked them to sacrifice their first born children. When they refused, saying "No -- that is wrong, I won't do something wrong even for a God" -- then God knew that they were good men and left them alone.

When Abraham agreed to kill his son, God realized that he needed special help to get back on the right track. Given that Abraham married his sister, raped his slaves and cast his bastard son into the desert -- it looks like being chosen didn't help him much.
