I occasionally have a dream where i'm being hugged so tightly that I can't breathe, or just generally have trouble breathing. Could this be caused by actually having difficulty breathing while sleeping ?

I didn't really take note of the dream, the breathing difficulty in the dream doesn't last too long, I think I wake up after it though

It's possible.

It could also mean that you feel as though you're being smothered by someone.

Sleep apnea will cause you to stop breathing, and your body will fight this to try and wake you. Some times it could be like bad dream and scare the H*** out of you to wake you and take a breath of air.Sleep on your side if this does not help go see doctor and get sleep test to see if you have this condition. Also do not eat heavy before going to bed.

Breathing equates to being alive. The condition or speed of your breathing in the dream may also depict your pace of life, its stress or relaxation.

It could be. I'd see a doctor about it. Maybe a therapist if the doctor can't find anything wrong.
