I'm looking to get a new bed that I plan to sleep on for at least...the next four years. I have a relatively small bedroom, and I would also like to add some seating space. I was looking at a futon/sofa-bed so I could kill two birds with one stone. My problem is is that on the past futons I've been on, they have been much squishier than a regular mattress and they don't seem like they would be good on my back if I slept on them continuously. Are there any Futons/sofa Beds with two mattresses? For example, when it is in the couch set up, you would sit on one mattress and the other one would support your back, while on the bed set up, the two mattresses would lay together creating one queen or full size mattress. I need to find one like that because that would solve my mattress-firmness problem. Buying a couch and a bed is not an option. Thanks!

I used to have a futon with 2 standard mattresses on it. I simply had a friend make over-sized handles for it and used both of them for seating and sleeping. (The handles that you use to convert it for sleeping also keeps the mattress on for seating. Larger handles make it possible to double the mattresses...)

It looks a little goofy unless you get a futon mattress cover for a premium mattress, which will fit 2 standard mattresses snugly. It cuts down on the comfort of the arm rests if you're a tall person. It also may take you some practice to make the transition from bed to sofa smoothly.

However it is very comfy. I chucked the futon a year ago, but still have the mattresses. My son would rather sleep on them in the middle of the floor than in his bed.

I have a futon that I have slept on for three years. When I bought it, I opted for the "premium mattress". It was more expensive, but it was worth it. It's very comfortable. Most furniture stores do not have a good selection of futons. I would shop at a futon store (if you have one in your area) that specializes in this. They should be able to help you find one that meets your needs.

If you’re picky when it comes to furniture, like us, and you won’t settle for any old color or fabric, why not consider a customized sofa bed? Nowadays there are plenty of designs which give you the choice between multiple colors and fabrics. Choose a style that will suit your existing interior decor, or go for a neutral colored sofa bed and accessorize with colorful cushions. The type of sofa bed you need depends mainly on it’s usage, so consider how frequently it will be used, who will be using it and where it will go. Don’t prioritize value for money if you’re looking for a long term investment for your main living area.

It fit inside a Dodge Caravan.. but it was turned diagonally with the back seats removed, of course. Also, it fit inside a U-Haul rental van just fine.
