E filing begins January 12th. My office is always really slow with the W2s. So i take my last paystub of the year and file the first day possible with Turbo Tax,. On most paystubs all the info you need to file is right on there. H &R Block are doing an RAl based on this pricipal this year, but the fees are high. Do Turbotax on the 12th and you'll get your refund about 15 days later which is pretty fast.

Some tax preparers will estimate your return and offer a LOAN based on your last pay statement. Actually filing your return requires the W-2. Even e-filers are required to obtain the W-2 and any other documents that would be attached to a paper return before filing. In the case of Internet filing, as long as you enter all the information from the W-2, they really have no way to tell if you have the actual form. Jan 12 is the first day the IRS will accept e-filed returns. I have heard it is possible to use a substitute W-2 in some circumstances, but they say you must wait until mid-February to do so.

I can view MY W-2s from past years on a secure website at work. I will be checking daily to see when they post the new ones.

If you are an employee:

Your employer is required to provide you with a W-2 by January 31.

If you are unable to get the W-2, the IRS will accept Form 4852 in place of a W-2. You can use the final pay stubs to complete Form 4852.

However, returns with this form will not be accepted by the IRS until the middle of February.

If you are not an employee:

You file using your own records of self-employment income, 1099s if given to you, bank records, etc.

I was told, if you take your last paycheck stub to Jackson Hewlitt, you can file your taxes. But call and ask them first.
