Seeing a nutritionist is the best thing I ever did, medically speaking. Be cautious of some advice. For instance I am diabetic and the oats recommended to help with cholesterol have too many carbs (which affect blood sugar).
Also www.fitday.com has a free food calculator that will look up and record many nutritional elements, including cholesterol and calories to help you monitor and control. Consider making some permanent changes in foods you buy (for the entire family), by switching to lower cholesterol versions of things, like butter.
Peace be with you!

Excercise and eat right. You say you and your family are all overweight and you don't eat fruit or vegetables? So that means you are eating sugars and fats! And that is where cholesterol comes from. You need a nutritionist!
What do you mean by "Bother your stomach?"- your body was made to digest, not just break down carbs and fats. Don't mash foods- CHEW!:) Cut pears and apples into little slices and chew well: freeze grapes and enjoy them as a cool treat. Find veggies you like- broccoli and spinach are full of nutrients.
Measure your meat- a slice the size of a deck of cards is one serving.
Why be on pills for the rest of your life- they are expensive, have side effects and we don't know what long-term (30 years) effects will be for things like statins? Isn't it wiser to take control of your own life by exercising daily and cutting out most of the fat in your diet? Why not ask your family to do this as a team?
Non-dairy creamers usually contain hydrogenated oils that don't go bad as easily, but are not as good for you. Learn to drink it black (I can't so I switched to tea) or use non-fat milk.
Some people do have hereditary cholesterol problems but this is rare- most people can correct their levels with diet and other lifestyle changes.
Oat bran has been shown to help, so try that. Start reading labels and go to the American Dietary Association for help (website is referenced here). The US Centers for Disease Control has excellent resources including the proven DASH guidelines.
Don't get advice from just anyone- get help from professionals! If a well-meaning person gives you bad advice that hurts you, what then? (I'll be a doctor in June:)
You can do this! Start fresh for the new year!
Good luck!

Americans do not get enough fiber in their diets. That is why sometimes people get high cholesterol. The fibers break down and pulls the plaque off of the arterial walls.
Since you have a sensitive stomach. Perhaps you see your doc, ask for a acid reducer. To help with the eating of veggies and fruits. Also, you can buy any fiber laxative over the counter. It adds bulk to your diet which in time will help lower your cholestrol.
Also, get out and walk, even if it is 15 min per day. Lower you fatty food intake. You dont have to eat fast food to eat fatty food. Eat leaner meats, chicken and fish. Try eating six small meals each day. This will help boost your metabolism and give you good energy through out the day.
Good luck
If you go on a statin ( lipid lowering agent) remember it essential to have liver function test's done every six months.

I had high cholesterol and I take 6000mg of omega 3 each day (fish oil) along with 1/2 hour strenuous walk every day and my bad levels have lowered and my good levels have raised, it took 8 months. There are also cholesterol lowering margarines on the market which apparantly make a difference too. I also lost weight.

Read "Fit for Life" by Harvey Diamond. (detoxing body gets rid of toxins and then fat) and you should be able to lower your cholesterol eating this way. Trust me, I do this lifestyle and so can you.
1) Eat fruits in the morning from the time you get up till noontime (nothing else.....i mean nothing!) fruits are meant to be eaten by themselves (do this every single day) I just throw bananas, apples, oranges, frozen blueberries in a blender in the morning drink that and eat fruits thereafter until noontime.
2) combine carbs with other carbs
3) combine protein with veggies and salads (no carbs - bread, rice, pastas, cereals, etc)- lower the meat's in your diet.
Steam or boil your veggies, it's less havoc in the stomach.
4) stay away from Dairy foods (eggs, milk, yogurt etc). If you must have it, eat by itself
RAW nuts (should be eaten with veggies only) nothing else, cucumbers or a salad is best.
5) stay away from acidic foods and drinks (juices and sodas, coffee, caffeine) and processed canned/frozen foods
6) take plant enzymes to help you digest cooked foods properly, it's very safe and not toxic to the body.
And mostly, start walking, get excercise 30 min. a day if possible.

if it runs in your family, take the pills, you will live a healthy life, make sure your triglycerides are checked also, that's the fat in your blood, I have the same problem, but after finding the right meds from my Doctor, all my blood work is normal now, I do not like pills either, but I look at it this way, thank God for modern medicine, if it where not for the meds i would not be here, so I just take them and enjoy my life the best I can. Sometimes eating right and exercise is not enough, but it helps.
