I didn't have much swelling or bruising afterwards and have not smoked or used a straw, although I did eat "real food" after the 3rd day. I am still kind of sore, but I am okay after taking some Advil. However, I'm concerned because my mouth tastes/smells funny. I have been brushing my teeth very lightly because I'm afraid of hurting myself, but I read that a weird taste/smell could be a sign of dry socket. Ugh. Am I paranoid? Also, I used a straw briefly (3 seconds), a small one, before I remembered not to, and today I sucked some icing off my fingers, also before remembering not to. AGHHH!

So. Should I still be a little sore? Is the taste/smell thing a dry socket or do I just need to brush harder? :(

I too got dry socket, because I smoked too soon after having a tooth pulled. Yes, dry socket hurts like the dickens, and the only real relief is to go back to the dentist. He/she will put a dab of antibiotic into it, and then fill it with cotton. Dry socket does not cause any abnormal smell or taste. That could be a bit of blood that oozed out of the wound, too. Rinsing your mouth with a good, tasty mouthwash should also help. Brush as hard as you like, just not back there on the tooth sockets. You can also eat firm foods, as long as you chew with the front teeth. Sometimes it takes a week or two -maybe more- for the holes to heal up. So be patient.

Trust me, if you had dry socket you'd know it. I got dry socket once, and the pain was sooo unbearable I actually WISHED for a toothache. I had to go to the dentist and she put some kind of salve on it and it cleared up. So just by you being able to even type that paragraph tells me you don't have dry socket. But the smell and the taste thing, well that just may be because your not brushing as well as you should be for fear of hurting yourself. Don't worry....this too shall pass.

I had a similar thing happen with the taste/smell. Give your mouth a good swish with saltwater or try an antiseptic rinse (Savacol) It could be something like food stuck in your stitches that is going off. That's what mine was (ew) old chicken caught between the clot and the stitches. Go back and see the person who did it if it is really bothering you.

my sister has a dry socket and it looks like a giant hole where her tooth once was. I saw it today and it freaked me out...looked painful. I think you'd see something weird like that going on if you had a dry socket. Most places require a follow up appointment after wisdom teeth removal, so call ahead or discuss your concerns at that time. hope it heals~

I had dry socket once, and if you are just a little sore, that is not what's wrong. You just need some time to heal.

Are you following directions like gargling with saltwater? They should have put you on a antibiotic to prevent infection, but if you are worried, call the dentist office and speak with them. If they stitched you up and it bled freely for most of teh day it shoul be healing up fine, but as they say you shouldn't suck on anything or spit.
