ALL Chihuahuas are Toys, being in the Toy classification in the AKC.
The difference between 'toy' Chihuahuas and 'regular' Chihuahuas is the breeder and their greed.
If you dig deeply into anyone marketing any special variety of any breed, you will find a person who is breeding their dog strictly for profit. A person who does no health checks on their dogs. A person who does not take their dog into the public 'dog world' and display them for scrutiny of their 'competitor' breeders. A person who does not try to breed for standard dogs and improve upon the breed. A person who doesn't care that the dogs they are breeding might not be healthy, either mentally or physically.
My best advice is to completely avoid any breeders who market their pups as 'rare' or 'unique'. This only means that this breeder isn't trying to stay within breed standards. They almost certainly don't belong to any dog club. Don't show or work their dogs. Don't test their dogs for genetic diseases.
Yet they will charge the same prices, often try to get more, than those who spend thousands of dollars proving their dogs are quality breeding stock.
And these unscrupulous breeders will find takers for their 'rare' puppies. As PT Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute."

Chis only come in ONE size. Don't be fooled!! Petstores and backyard breeders and puppy mills use words like 'toy' 'teacup toy' 'extra small' etc. to try and sell purse dogs to people who don't know any better. The only way to make a smaller Chi is to breed 2 runts together, which is very bad news. It can result in all sorts of health issues and deformities. DO NOT BUY a dog that someone advertises as a 'toy' chihuahua! That is not an honest breeder and he'll probably overcharge you.

A Chihuahua is a dog that is in the Toy Group. I never heard of a "regular' Chihuahua.

A chihuahua is a toy breed. Period. No toy, miniature, teacup, Regular, pocket, etc. They are just a toy breed. Some are very small, some are larger. The correct spelling is CHIHUAHUA!

often these new "toy" breeds are pups that are a result of line breeding, which is dog inbreeding where they breed for only one characteristic small size. there is no recognized breed of toy chihuahua, they are already small by nature and beware of a breeder telling you otherwise.

A reputable breeder vs. a back yard breeder. Normally a byb has bred undersized to undersized to get a "toy". Their just doing more bad breeding and ruining the breed standard.
