It depends on how heavy the hanged person is, the length of the rope, and how far they were dropped.
If the drop was too short or the rope too long, the neck vertebrae and spinal cord would not be snapped quickly. Instead of dying instantly, death would occur by suffocation.
For a rather complete and macabre description of hanging as a means of execution (including pictures), see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging

The cervical vertebrae break, which severs the spinal cord. If it is done right, the person won't feel anything and won't suffer. If not done right (ie the rope is too short or the person doesn't weigh enough, they will strangle to death which could take 3 to 5 minutes).

I've always wondered this, myself. I've never heard of such a public, world-known hanging.
I've always wondered whether it's the neck that breaks, or blackout via lack of oxygen. Anyway, I consider hanging to be weird and particularly gruesome.
I imagine that the cause of death depends on how tight the noose is. If people can hang themselves in suicide, it must be a pretty quick death.

if it is done right, when the trap door has been released and the person who is being hanged drops,it should be enough to break their neck causing instant death if not then they suffer maybe 10-15 minutes tops before dying

well it depends on how you hang them honestly. you can still find the records from hangings in the US that records weight and drop distance. if you do it right the neck is broken on the drop and there is possibly no pain. but at the worst about 1 minute maybe 1.5 minutes before you black out. thats why we dont do that in the us anymore.

Tee Hee, Brutus! Hurled biscuits and threw the java. Drake Circumcised the world with a 100-foot clipper. MUAHAHAAAA!! I think I just broke something laughing. Those were all superb, thank you much. I used to have a bunch of these but I don't know what I did with them... saving these, and giving you a star!!

Depending on the drop, pretty quickly, because it can snap your neck. So it'd be almost instantaneously.
