Lot left Zoar and retired with his two daughters to a cave in an adjacent mountain. In Gen. 19:30-38, Lot's daughters incorrectly believed they were the only females to have survived the devastation. They assumed it was their responsibility to bear children and enable the continuation of the human race. On two subsequent nights, according to the plan of the older daughter, they got their father drunk enough to have sexual intercourse with them, drunk enough that he is described as being unaware of what was happening. By him each became pregnant. The first son was named Moab (Hebrew, lit., "from the father" [meh-Av]). He was the patriarch of the nation known as Moab. The second son was named Ammon or Ben-Ammi (Hebrew, lit., "from our nation"). He became the patriarch of the nation of Ammon.

They fled the destruction of Sodom, and eventually moved into the mountains away from Zoar (a small town some distance from Sodom, that had escaped the destruction). Lot seems to have been suffering from some sort of paranoid behaviour: he refused to live in any sort of town, and became a cave dweller instead.

His daughters eventually despaired of having any sort of "normal" married family life, and committed incest with their father in order to get pregnant. Their sons (Ben-Ammi and Moab, respectively) became the progenitors of two different tribes from that area. The Moabites and Ammonites were two fierce rivals of the Jewish people 500 years later.

But because it was the law that the bloodline be continued, the daughters took turns getting their father drunk and slept with him, so they could have children because when they thought that it was only them three left in the entire world, it was what they thought they had to do to survive and still obey the laws of God.

When you first read the story it sounds creepy until you realize what was happening.
