I am curious to know what happends to film that has been developed from any photo center but is not picked up? Is there a time period for which they keep those photos? What happends when they are not picked up? are they destroyed? thrown away? and can any person buy those photos that have been picked up even if they are not yours? Any help is appreciated!

Years ago I worked at a photo chain, and for one of my tasks they put me in charge of the "unclaimed" photo department. The photos weren't considered "unclaimed" until after two years. After that, I spent months calling every customer, hunting down folks that had moved or changed numbers. We spoke to every one personally (no leaving messages) and gave them an additional 60 days to claim their photos. There were very few we couldn't contact in some way. Those photos remaining unclaimed (by that time, almost three years) were indeed destroyed, though the negatives were kept on file indefinitely.

I don't know if every chain is that conscientious.

I think it really depends on the place where the photos were developed. In most cases they are destroyed or thrown away.

I never put the date on the envelope the film goes in. Gives you a little more play time.

Did you ever see the movie "One Hour Photo?"
