Typically people that "die when they break their hip" are older people. When you break your hip you usually end up getting a hip replacement. This is a very difficult surgery for the elderly, and often times they don't recover from it. Because the elderly are not as mobile as say a twenty or thirty year old, they can easily develop pneumonia, which in older people can be deadly. Rehabilitation is very long and strenuous, and after the surgery the patient is never the same.
So to sum up your question, it's not the actual breaking of the hip that kills people, it's complications from treatment. It's not common that people die from such a break, and it does happen but typically age and general health play a big role in the outcome.

I will try to explain this in the best terms that you can understand. Not to insult your intellegence, however, so you can understand it in the best terms.
The bones have some fat in them, when a large bone or any bone is broke, that fat can escape the bone into the blood stream and it is called a thrombus. When fat is moving in the blood vessel it is called a emboli. If fat travels from the blood stream into the lungs, it is deadly.
Also, related to the vast majority of blood vessels in the leg. When a leg or other bones usually the leg are broken, and is immobile, blood flow is restiricted. Blood kind of collect's in the blood vessels (veins) this is very dangerous too. It causes a thrombus ( blood clot) the return blood pushes on the blood clot, when it releases, it is called a emboli. Which is a moving blood clot, goes with returned blood to the lungs and prevents blood flow to the lung and deprives the heart of oxygen.
That is why people die from broken hips. It can happen to anyone. A broken bone may not have to take place. Just being immobile for several days to weeks can cause a thrombus. Normally when a sick person, young or old is in the hospital and is immobile, they put compression socks on them ( TED hose) or you may see the things that look like a brace and it pushes air from a machine to the brace. These are all protocol to stop/prevent thrombus'. In exterme cases, a drug that is injected into the abdomen called Lovenox. It makes the blood less viscous. ( thin's)
If someone that you love has had any of the mentioned problems and are getting Lovenox injections, dont worry. The primary physician just feels that it is the best therapy for them.
TED hose are also used in short stay hospital visits, out patient surgeries and congestive heart failure. They just help the blood return to the pulmonary system.
Hope this answered your question....

People who break hips are usually old with other complications. The most common cause of death is complications after surgery. For example, someone on long term bed rest, especially with a compromised immune system, is at risk of pneumonia. That pneumonia can be more dangerous because they are already weak, they are not moving because of the hip and illness and it gets worse . . .
It's a dangerous circle leading to a bad end.

Because there's an artery located around the hip, I forget what it's called. But if it's severed, you can bleed to death. Or if you mean why do people die after hip surgery, it usually happens with older people whose bodies are not as resilient as they once were, so they can't move around a lot. After having surgery it's important to move around so no blood clots form. A blood clot can form and move quickly to your lungs, causing an embolism. Embolisms cause instant death. That's all I know, hope this helps.

Besides the blood clotting issues for people who break their hip, the extended bed rest can increase the risk for pneumonia. In an elderly person, that can be fatal.

anesthesia has a pronunced effect on the recovery of older people. It affects peopleEven operations considered fairly routine in younger patients, like appendectomies, become high-risk for nursing home residents. “Something about undergoing anesthesia, the surgery’s physiological assault on the body, impacts older people much more than we think,” said Dr. Emily Finlayson, a colorectal surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, and lead author of a recent study published in The Annals of Surgery.

this isn't as actual because it was. speed is important so if a individual is stumbled on immediately after a fall and delivered directly to wellness midsection and has the operation to repair or replace the fractures joint the therapeutic technique starts very immediately after the fall. If even nonetheless, a individual is stumbled on many hours (in some situations next day) after one in each and every of those fall the outlook isn't so good. i will quote 2 very diverse examples right here. One lady I knew broke her hip elderly 80 one and referred to as for help. A neighbour heard her and have been given into her domicile and despatched for the ambulance. She had her operation day after in the present day and died elderly ninety 5. the different lady replaced into ninety whilst she had her fall and replaced into left mendacity in her doorway on a chilly stone floor in a single day and located next morning. She died in wellness midsection a fortnight later after having the mandatory operation. The long era before getting interest could have contributed to her loss of life lots greater beneficial than the actual shown fact that she replaced into lots older than the different lady. She replaced into incredibly greater healthful in simple terms before the fall, doing her own paying for, house household projects and gardening so replaced into no FRAIL little old lady. The term 'speed is of the essence' extremely applies to those style of injuries.

Never heard of it. Maybe with very old people, being bed ridden so long afterward just sets things on a downward spiral.
