The sea doesn't have a color and any color that is present is caused by impurities that may be found in the rocks and earth and in rivers and streams flowing into the sea.

The sea in it's natural state is nothing more than water with some minerals dissolved in it - mainly salt. It's exactly the same as a glass of water with a bit of salt disolved in it, only on a larger scale.

The sea can appear to be blue but that's only because it's reflecting the sky (for why the sky is blue look up Rayleigh Scattering).

Actually, the water in the sea is colourless. But sometimes it appears blue or green.

This colour is caused by one of these things: planktons, microorganisms or substances.

Planktons are microscopic organisms that that leave in the sea. A whale can eat thousands of planktons a day. So you can imagine the number of planktons in the sea. Therefore, the green colour is caused by these animals.

Microorganisms such as bacteria are also present. these are sometimes harmful, but sometimes helpful. They help the vegetations and plants to survive.

Substances such as minerals and elements (iron ,manganese) are sometimes in seas. They give a colour to water.

Therefore, there are plenty things that give the sea a colour, but they are actually colourless, just like tap water.

Different seas and oceans have different colours, according to the vegetation growing in them and the reflection of the sky.

IT IS TRUE THAT THE SKY REFLECTS ONTO THE SEA LIKE A MIRROR CAUSING A BLUE TINT APPEARANCE....ACTUALLY AS YOU GO IN TO DEEPER SEA IT APPEARS A DARKER BLUE COLOR DUE TO LESS & LESS LIGHT PENETRATION & DARKNESS MIXING WITH THE BLUE REFLECTION....SOME WATERS HAVE OTHER THINGS LIKE DUST,CHEMICALS,ALGAE AND PLANKTON WHICH CAUSE THE WATER TO BE TINTED FURTHER IN DIFFERENT COLORS...VERY PURE WATER APPEARS COLORLESS --CLEAR IN EVERY RESPECT NOTHING TO ABSORB SKY OR BOTTOM COLOR ESPECIALLY IN SHALLOW WATER.....

sea water is clear...
the color you might see is the reflection of the sky above it...
on a side note....the black sea is not really black....nor the red sea really red....

its usually blue due to the reflective nature of the water, although sea water itself is colorless.
