i have 3 shih tzus. very lovable, very cute, smart dogs. downside is grooming. They have long hair (not fur, they don't shed which is good). but they must be brushed every day or kept trimmed. I keep mine trimmed, shorter in summer as they love to play outside.

The best way to truely understand and know about the toy group of dogs are to research them. You can get books and read about the different breeds, look online at different sites, talk to people.

The AKC (American Kennel Club) is a site that can tell you about the 21 types of Toy Dogs:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/toy_group.cfm

You should also check to see if a toy dog is right for you. I have a miniature pinscher which belongs to the toy group. Before I adopted her i researched to make sure she was a good breed for me, talked to people, and understood what challanges I might go through.

GOod Luck.

I'm partial to Yorkies since I raise them. Maltese are also sweet but if you don't have time to spend on brushing their hair then you may want to consider a shorthaired breed. I will email you some pics of my sweeties. A Pappion know as the butterfly dog is very sweet and doesn't require alot of brushing.

I have a Shih Tzu. His name is Wookie, since he looks like one. They are wonderful dogs, silly, smart, nice and cute. They also get along with other dogs, and people. They don't cost much, and hair care can be easy. I have my dog with a medium hair length, so he looks cute. But I don't have to brush him every day, like those dogs you see on T.V.

Chihuahuas are the best. Go to the AKC website and look at the toy breeds there.
