If you work out, you will gain muscle weight which is much more healthy than eating badly for a couple of weeks.

Particularly sit-ups will help you a lot.

5'9" and 135 pounds corresponds to a BMI of 19.9, which is in the normal weight range. So don't worry too much.

I would go for toning and building a little muscle rather than losing weight. That way, you can trim your tummy down a bit, firm up whatever you feel you need to and still actually gain the pounds your doctor thinks you may need to as long as you eat healthy. It's a win-win situation!

Listen to your doctor. Don't try to lose weight. If you want to get rid of your belly, then do crunches, sit-ups, Pilates, or something like that to tone your belly. And relax b/c you don't have to worry about being fat!
