That's a loaded question. A lot is used, and some of that is wasted in that bulbs that use less energy could be used, and products that pull more electricity could be avoided.
I consider myself an environmentalist and I don't decorate outside with lights, but I do use other types of decorations in the yard. Inside, we use a manufactured tree to avoid waste since we don't have space to replant living trees, and the 2 strings of lights don't pull a lot of power if used for a few hours at night for a few weeks.
If some people need lights to help them feel the spirit of Christmas, then maybe it's not a waste after all. Other people have Christmas in their hearts all year long but there's no electric bill to show it.

Way too much. Some of the houses in my neighborhood are so lit up, they blot out the stars and the money spent on the electric bills attached to them could probably feed a small African village for a month.
