how can you tell if a guy wants more then friends?

ok so this guy "George" he told a mutual friend he liked me. I said noway because i was still with my whatever he was for 4 years still. So about 6 month passes. I ran into him at a show on mother's day. (we hang out in the same local scene). He didn't even say hi he just avoided me. So I seen him a little later and added him over on myspace. Highschoolish i know. So we talked daily and he invited me to join him at his job for this you can only get in with vip card event. I go with a friend and we decided the next day to go to this festival to celebrate our Polish heritage. Well he never called or talked to me online since. But here's the kicker when in public he'll make a point to talk to me,walk me to my car,by my drinks but then I don't see him again or talk to him again. I find this weird. That's why I'm assuming he wants to be friends only because that doesn't sounds like a guy who likes me.Sound i chuck this up to i missed out and should of asked him out back at the vip event?
