My first love is the golden retriever but they are too big for our living arrangement..I've heard the 'havenese' breed are great, does anyone have any other suggestions?..not interested in poodles or poodle-like dogs.
Thanks!! for any & all feedback..Cheerz!!

I can't answer this question for you because the best breed for you may not be the best breed in my opinion. I have always loved yorkies because they are lovable and small and for many other reasons but i think it might help if you check out this website and research what dog would be best to fit your lifestyle, it lists different categories in which diff dogs will be listed to fit that lifestyle:

Good luck!

It very much depends on the personality of the dog. I have a very friendly Chihuahua who loves all humans and cats. She gets so happy when we get visitors that I have to walk her a few minutes before they arrive otherwise she will pee out of sheer joy. I tell the people to call when they are 15 minutes away for that purpose. That is the only time she will have an accident. She barks but not to much and does not yelp like many Chihuahuas do. She hates other dogs though and tends to believe that she is the boss of the cats even though they are twice as big as she is. She sometimes tries to herd them, they play along until they have enough then they either smack her or jump up on something to high for her to reach them.

Don't totally discount poodle-like dogs. I have a 5 month old Bichonpoo (1/2 Bichon Frise 1/2 Poodle) she is the best dog in the world. You cannot ask for a better dog. She is mellow, loves everyone. Doesn't shed, is hypoallergenic. Is very smart and easily trainable and oh so cute. See her photo at left and on my 360.

I agree with the answer of the pug . Our pug is a wonderful companion for us. But you do need to check out all the smaller breeds and make your own decision.

You need to especially check how much attention you can pay to the dog. Some need much more attention than others.

Good luck on finding the best companion for yourself.

Research research research and go to an ethical registered breeder.

Other people can't tell you what breed is best for you, that is something you need to figure out on your own.

The only piece of advice I can give is to make sure you get a dog with the same levels of energy as you.

Minature Dachshunds (weinnie dogs) are great pets, don't hardly shed at all, and you will never get bored with them. The only upkeep to them is keeping their ears clean, dogs with long ears tend to have earmites sometimes. They are great doorbells and never see a stranger. They are also clean dogs and don't need baths as often as other breeds. Good Luck.

I agree with some of the others...no one can pick your dog for you. I've been doing animal rescue for years..and I've owned different breeds of dogs....mostly big ones...and I've fostered lots of dogs...pure bred and mixed. As far as small dogs go...I love my little Chihuahua. He's VERY loyal...and he's so precious. He's NOT a barker or a BITER...he loves all people and other animals...even our German Shepherd...but he will put him in his place...and I NEVER leave them alone together. He also likes the cats and even plays with them...he's a LOT of fun! I have friends who have Boston Terriers...also very nice....and PUGS! My sister owns 2 of them...they're sweet little dogs also!

the most cherished dog you could have would be one from a shelter. they have many small breed and small breed mixes that would fit what you are asking. any dog that you take into your home and care for with good food, love, praise, training and routine vet care will be a gem no matter the breed.

Chihuahua. They are the ultimate lap dog. They are so faithful and loving, so cute, cudlly, smart. So small. Trust me if you get a chihuahua, you will ask yourself, what took me so long to fall in love with this breed.
