I don't think it is ok to be in the U.S. illegally! I came in the front door from Canada. What makes illegals think they can come in the back door and get special treatment. They don't belong here in the U.S.! They come in through my window uninvited and expect me to feed them and their children and to pay them on top of that? We are fresh out of handouts!! If I can become American legally, so can they. By the way, they should learn the language before they apply! Maybe our politicians need a lesson on this. I'm tired of pressing 1 for English, arn't you?

I speak French so I know all too well about wanting to speak in my native tongue; however, you don't see anyone bending over for us or the large Chinese population in the U.S. because we learned the language!

I have no problem pressing 1 for English. It's just a function of our multi-cultural society that any other dominant languages are also used, especially for business purposes. In most of the country, it's Spanish, but on the west coast, you also hear Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese (or another Asian language) on many phone systems.
I take it you don't live in the Los Angeles area. I lived there for the last 6 years, and it's not just Spanish that is spoken there. As someone above me mentioned, there are numerous Asian languages on the ATMs. I know that Korean is one of them (as I am of Korean descent). There's Little Saigon in Garden Grove. Long Beach has an area called Little Cambodia. There's Chinatown east of downtown LA, and Koreatown to the southwest. Good luck finding a native English speaker in any of those areas. You can vote and take the California driving test not only in English or Spanish, but in Tagalog (Philippines), Khmer (Cambodia), Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese. The San Fernando Valley has the largest population of Armenians in the US.
Even here in Las Vegas where I recently moved, I live in the area west of the Strip along Spring Mountain known as Chinatown. From Valley View all the way to Rainbow, at least 60% of the signs are in both English and some Asian language.
The reality is that you aren't going to get away from it. There are over 5,000 distinct language groups on our planet. I doubt we can put every single one on our phone systems, but we do put the most commonly used ones on them. Be glad English is the first option, and not Spanish or Chinese. You can push 1 right away and not have to hear the other languages.

Yes- English should be the ONLY language used.
If you've been to China- there aren't too many English services offered. The same for many other countries- it is expected that as a visitor you do in Rome what the Romans do.
Why this is never enforced in English speaking countries I can only suspect it is the constant bow-beating of the silent majority by PC thugs and their Socialist cronies into guilt-tipping English speakers into feeling like new Colonialists in their own nation.
Marxists, Socialists and PC-aphiles should burn to keep the poor warm.

Excuse me, but yes they are bending over for the large Chinese population in the U.S. also!! Have you ever been to Chinatown, Little Saigon, and Koreatown with all their signs in Asian?? I hear Filipinos and Chinese talking in their language all the time, and when you ask them something they say they don't speak english. And yes I've been to largely Chinese cities in California and they also have "press 2 for Chinese" in ATM machines. Don't give me this crap that it's only Spanish that they are using....and if they are who cares!! Most towns in the Southwest are named in Spanish like Los Angeles and San Diego. I think you're just too lazy to pick up your finger and press 1 for English???

I'll bet that's why you left Canada - you hate not being able to press 2 for French. LOL
edited to add - (apologies for the french comment) so why not learn spanish and be tri-lingual - you could demand a much higher salary.

So many good answers. Yes me too.
I call and tell the people I do biz with I don't want to have to listen to ANY Spanish. I too speak Spanish but it is the point of the thing. We all need to let other Americans know we ain't going to take it anymore.
But I also agree with the point that what biz does to accomodate their customers is their biz. Freedom.
What I don't want/like is my own government greeting me in English and Spanish. I have complained about that as well both verbaly and in writing.
What good does this all do? Quien Sabe?
You certainly write well for someone who speaks a native French.
Tu et bien!

sure. usa is a multilingual us of a, for specific, yet English is the de facto stable language as a results of fact our shape and all next rules are written in English. even inspite of the shown fact that, in case you extremely must be non-discriminatory, we'd want approximately "Push 3 for Farsi, Push 4 for Russian, Push 5 for Thai, Push 6 for Urdu..." etc for approximately one hundred fifty or so others. it somewhat is discriminatory to accomodate Spanish basically.

Darn right if your going to live here than learn English.I was born in America and speak English, when in school they made me take French lessons.who knew at that time we would be taken over by the Spanish. You know if you go to any other country and you don't speak there language, you don't get special privileges like you do in America. In China on the streets you learn there language or you go hungry and with out shelter>they don't like us the best.
