Especially given the political activism of churches these days...

First of all, as a Preacher's kid I can tell you that most pastors do not make the big bucks of the televangelists. My last pastor made 30K per year plus housing, and that was for 7 years of college training. And a pastor is on-call 24/7.

Secondly, most churches still have to follow strict guidelines on separation of church and state and that includes stances on political candidates.

When you donate to a church, you are donating for a lot more than just the pastor's salary. My last church, they tithed out and most churches do the same. By tithing out, they give to missions and support churches in other countries who have less money.

So, I'm not sure if this answer helps you to understand this, but walk a mile in their mocassins, please!

Hey DUDE,
Are you sure that you are not a politician? This sounds like you need to be. I DO AGREE with you here. There should be some public record of the money donated to churches and organizations of that kind. Have a great day!

Don't give money to your pastor, but your church. Churches are not political and can be lose tax exempt status if pastors endorse poltical candidates. I always hear at least one such controversy during election time.

Parachurch organizations are political, such as the Christian Coalition or 700 Club. They are not churches and their finances are handled and regulated differently.

If you donate to a pastor HE has to report it as income. If you donate it to a church it is considered non profit even if they have not filed a 501c3 with the IRS.

When I give money to a politician, it's public record. But when I donate to a Mosque, I'm a terrorist. Why?

Pastors are not elected officials and our tax money does not support the church.

Pastors are not public officials paid by the public and are thus not accountable to the public.
